3D day 1

Day one of 3D pathway consisted of us doing small simple drawings e.g drawing your house number then being able to produce something much different out of it e.g using this house number to create a kettle. In doing these small simple exercises I discovered that you can actually create or design something without realising or having an idea in mind and that this method was a clever and quick way to form ideas.

Our second task of the day was to create a 3D building using only one sheet of A1 paper and only one strip of tape the same length as half your arm. This had to be 20 cm tall and be able to hold down a water bottle filled to the top with water.  I found this to be a difficult task to complete as I knew it had to hold down a bottle of water which seemed impossible to complete. However, it was exciting to do a challenging task and was interesting to know what the outcome would be.

Our final task of the day was to build something 30 cm high with 4 pieces of card that I could either stand on, sit on, or lay down on. I decided to work in a pair so we was able to use more card, however we now had to fit both of us onto whatever we decided to create. We decided to build a sofa for both of us to sit on, however this was not strong enough to hold both of us down. After a lot of trial and error of us trying out different positions in able to fit us both on we discovered that the only way would be for us to sit on each other but in doing this we could only last on the sofa for about 5 seconds. However, we also discovered that it was more than strong enough to hold just one of us up, so I was able to sit, lay and stand on it with out falling.

This is a photo of me standing on our final piece, showing that it is stable and strong enough to be able to stand on.

Figure 2: Untitled (2013) Authors own.

This is a photo showing the inside of our piece. We have rolled up 7 pieces of card to fit inside the sofa shape in order to keep it tight and stable. I think in doing this it was a successful thing to do but also unsuccessful as it was unable to hold both of us up. I think a better way to improve on this is to create something more square than round and have more points touching the ground so its supported more.

Figure 3: Untitled (2013) Authors own.

This is a photo showing that my structure is holding up the water bottle without breaking. However, it has slightly shrunk but overall did hold up the water bottle and was quite stable. I found this task to be a successful one as I had limited amount of paper and tape to use and managed to still hold up the water bottle. It was an interesting one to do as I was not 100% sure about what the outcome would be so was exciting to find out what would happen.

Figure 4: Untitled (2013) Authors own.

This is a photo of my structure with light held on to it and a small person made out of blue tack beside it. The reason for this is to make it look architectural as if my structure was a big building next to this person. I really enjoyed photographing this as it makes something rather simple look quite interesting to look at and gives you ideas in general about sculptures.

Figure 5: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
I took this photo from the top facing down to show the shadows of the structure and also the detail at the top and again showing the person beside it. I felt happy with my achievement as I thought my structure was rather simple and could have been more difficult and interesting but when taking a photograph I was happy with what I had achieved and how much lighting can make a difference when taking a photo.

Figure 6: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
This is another photo of my structure, I really like this one because I have the light just shining on the structure and the small person and it is blacked out from behind. In doing this it makes the viewer focus on the structure completely and the person and really observe the detail within the photo.

Figure 7: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
This is an image of me using one of the exercises we had done in todays task to create a new iPod. I decided to do a squiggle on the page and then formed a shape of an iPod with a screen showing the music playing, buttons to change the songs, pause stop and play the music and also added in a memory stick which could contain word documents or pictures. In doing this short exercise I had invented a new iPod which no body would have seen before and also included it to have a memory stick inside.

Tate modern, Academic Writing Day 1

Day one of our Academic Writing consisted of us visiting the Tate Modern Museum.
The Exhibition I chose to study was the 'Arte Povera And Anti-Form' exhibiton through Energy And Process Curated by Mark Godfrey and Helen Sainsbury. The Exhibition included Artists such as Robert Morris, Richard Tuttle, Kishio Suga, Seung-Taek Lee, Susumu Koshimizu and more. The theme of this exhibition is architecture and structure and also a touch of nature. The similarities between the artisits was that they were reconstructing natural objects using industrial materials. It was unusual to see such tall trees in an enclosed space as opposed to being outdoors, and also to have all the 3D objects placed in a white room. It made me feel quite small being in that room as the 3D objects were quite large and tall. The object which I found to be most interesting was created by Robert Morris, the piece is untitled, 1967-8. In involves rectangular sheets of industrial felt cut to make straight lines so when suspended the strips of felt would tumble from their own weight forming their own geometric shapes. I found this to be particularly interesting because I admired the idea of Morris' allowing the strips to fall on their own forming their own natural shapes. Overall, I found this to be the most useful room in terms of knowledge to learn and understand more about. The sculpture of this period upset traditional ideas about how art should be distributed and displayed. Overall, I found this to be the most useful room in terms of knowledge to learn and understand more about architecture and 3D sculptures. The sculptures addressed its immediate surroundings in new ways, drawing attention to the architecture of the gallery or gesturing to the space outside its walls.

Fashion and textiles pathway Day 3

On our final day of Fashion and Textiles we paired up and made our designs. This included us measuring each other to decide who would model each others and fitting it on to the mannequin. After completing my skirt to fit to scale. I modelled it on each floor around the uni and my partner took photographs of me. I enjoyed being able to actually create something that I had designed and was really happy with the outcome of my skirt. It was fun measuring and fitting it onto the mannequin whilst in progress of making it. I feel like I have achieved something by doing this as I had originally started from a sample to then producing a skirt fit to be worn.

I feel that I had achieved something in todays task as I had followed my designs and made a skirt that fits to scale. Feedback I got from students was really helpful in deciding whether to make the skirt a longer length or leave it the length made and leaving it the length made was a better choice and which I feel suited the style better. I did find it challenging to measure at points and to hold up against my body but overall was a success when capturing images of my final design. However, if I was able to repeat this task I would do the skirt shorter and make it bulk and add more curls of paper around if I had more time to do so. Overall, I am pleased with what I have accomplished as I didn't think I could create something like this on my own and really ended up enjoying the pathway of Fashion and Textiles much more than I had expected and wanted to do some more days exploring the pathway.

Fashion and Textiles Day 2

Todays tasks consisted of us bringing in 5 fashion photographs from magazine which show the full body figure of a model. With these photographs we was asked to create 3D outfits on to the models with our initial sample ideas.  Each of us then pinned one of our 5 onto a board for us to all observe each others and then to have a discussion on why we had a favourite and what we liked about each others.  I felt that I could have done much better with the first task we was given. I only realised how much I could have improved once viewing others and discussing their thoughts. However, I did enjoy playing around with the body figure and designing different clothing for each one.

Zoomed in you can see one of my designs on the top left hand corner

Another image of my design, using paper scrunched up and glued down to create a long skirt on the model

Another design of mine using newspaper scrunched up covering the model,  I find this to be my weakest design as it doesn't represent an outfit well, only covering what is already there.

On this design I used brown card to roll up small telescopes then taped them all together to form an unusual coat on to the model

On this design I used yellow paper and cut out shapes inside and out to form a spiky top

We was then asked to choose a specific area of the body to work from in our next exercise given.  I decided to choose legs as you can work nicely with this part of the body creating many different outfits covering this area. After choosing this area we was asked to repeat it using a photocopier and then to do different designs on each one either using materials or drawing.

Starting off by making yellow trousers, following my progress of making a newspaper skirt.

A photo of my progress

A photo of my final 9 images completed

I then decided to change the last one on the right on the middle row
I found myself to enjoy designing further samples of clothing on the model than i had expected and really found it to be a calming exercise to carry out but also very detailed at the same time. I enjoyed using materials to make designs rather than using sketches.

I then drew out designs on how I would create these designs for tomorrows tasks.  This included what materials to use,  what to do, small sketches of what I need to do in order to get to that skirt.  I found that sketching out the designs and thinking about what I wanted to do properly was really helpful in terms of planning out what I need to use and whether it would be possible to create.

Fashion and Textiles pathway Day 1

On day 1 of fashion and textiles pathway we started our day by given 3 themes. These were fonts, texture and structure. We were told to choose one of the three themes and create 5 3D samples. The theme I chose to work from was structure as I felt that it represented 3D samples well. I found that gradually the more samples I made the more 3D they produced. It was nice to see how others had developed ideas which also gave me ideas of samples to make. If I could re do my samples I would think more carefully about making it more 3D and maybe even draw out some quick sketches of ideas. However, I am happy with my chosen sample which I continued to use through out my day.

I began creating a 3D dog using newspaper and coloured card. This is a photo showing my progress.

I then created a flower, however this found to be more a 2D sample rather than a 3D sample

Figure 7: Selected Sample (2013) Authors own.
My fifth sample consisted of a christmas cracker look a like with coloured paper inside. We had to choose one of our 5 samples to repeat 20 times in smaller and larger scales. I chose this sample as i found it to be the most 3D and most interesting one out of the 5.

Figure 8: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
Recording my steps whilst repeating my sample continuously i cut out a big square of brown card and folded it over twice, i then used a craft knife to cut out shapes

We was then put into groups of 3 and gathered our pieces together around a mannequin. We was asked to decorate the mannequin using our pieces. After doing this we switched round to different mannequins using other peoples pieces to decorate it once given a word to decorate it with, for example "sexy".
We was only given a short amount of time to complete these tasks, such as 2-3 minutes. So had to be quite quick with our ideas of decorating and terms of thinking with including all the samples. However, I did like the time limit we had as it was using our first initial ideas that came into our heads and worked together with them quickly which I liked doing. This task appeared to be quite easy at some stages and then rather difficult in others, reasons for this is because we was given a theme for each mannequin and a set of samples and we had to make those samples fit in with the theme. e.g. using the word "sexy" we had to make our samples we was using appear to be sexy on the mannequin so had to be careful where we placed the samples and in what context we used them in. Again, it was nice to be able to do something different and working in a team with a short time limit to see an interesting unusual outcome each time and to also compare our work with other mannequin to see what other teams had produced with their samples locking in with the same theme.

I found that on my first day of Fashion and Textiles I had learned more than I had expected. It was interesting and unexpected how we had developed from a title of a theme forming 5 samples to then creating outfits onto the mannequin. It was not only interesting but a fun exciting task to do and without realising we had created some amazing outfits at the end.
