Design museum

Visiting the design museum was an amazing experience as I was able to visualise how 3D objects were made using a 3D printer.

These chairs have been designed by Jane Atfield. They have been made  out of recycled high density polyethylene. these chairs are therefore really the use of recycled plastic sheets. Atfield was inspired by a US sample and so then set out to find a british manufacturer to collect old bottles have them chipped, melted and flattened. the resulting sheets were then cut and screwed together to make simple chair forms. This is an unusual but different and exciting way to form a chair using recycled elements.
What I found particularly interesting about this piece is the way the way it is a timeline. Close up you can see written words formed all around the spiral object from the bottom to the top.
What really struck my eye from this piece is the intelligence used. From a far it appears to be a baby's face but close up it is lines draw across using darker shading or wider lines in some areas to form a shape of a face.
All of these objects have been created using the 3D printer. Each object has a use of different material involved such as paper, metal, wood, plastic.  I find it fascinating how technology has developed enough to create printers to form objects this big using various materials.

This is a much larger object printed using the 3D printer
