3D project 1, week 1

Week one of the 3D pathway consisted of us forming 10 3D structures from of a box of materials given to us. In creating these structures they became a starting point to our first project. I enjoyed doing this task because our structures could be as random as we wanted them to be and was more about just experimenting with using different materials.
I found this task to be easy and difficult at the same time because it was then to be used as a starting point for our first project so an idea had to be formed once these were completed.

Reflective Summary

Over the past 6 weeks I have been able to experiment with different techniques and ideas through each pathway. I have gained knowledge through each pathway and enjoyed learning something different each week. From lens based media I learnt that you can take a photograph and indicate a meaning of a word. In addition to this you can create story boards showing a short clip of a story involving a beginning a middle and an end and a struggle through out and how it is resolved. In fashion and textiles I learnt that you can start from a small sample and develop to create an item of clothing. It was interesting and exciting to see how we had developed at the end and how our samples remain through out the week. In the IT studio days I learnt how to work on my photoshop techniques and learnt about inDesign and illustration. I found this day to be helpful as I was able to adapt new skills on the computer which I will use further when commencing my chosen pathway. In 3D design I learnt that you can create and invent a new idea or object through any method and it could be as simple as drawing random shapes onto a page and turning that into a building or shoe. I liked this technique of exploring ideas as it's quick and unique to myself. In graphics Iearnt about typography and how you can create different styles of writing and new formats of presenting them. I also enjoyed collaging different features of a face onto one and then recording a section of this into my sketchbook. I enjoyed doing this because I had created a new face which doesn't exist and could  mix up genders and sizes of features together which I found to be different and unique. Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed experimenting in each pathway and have gained knowledge from each one.

Graphics day 3

Our final day of graphics consisted of us finishing our weekly projects of designing a future poster for our own exhibition which would be held in 2033. I found doing this project was actually quite difficult as it was picturing what would be held up in my gallery in 10 years time. I then started to do some small designs of what my final design would be on friday.

Figure 1: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
I began my first design by drawing out a simple house and adding in 'Daniella Architecture' as this is something I want to pursue in career wise. My next design involved a camera as I love taking images of anything and editing photos. For this design it states 'capture gallery' showing picture frames underneath which would be all my photographs I had taken in 2033
Figure 2: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
I then moved to my next design and included in one of my designs from the previous lesson on typography containing the word 'dream' written with stars. I also continued the handwriting further into the page and added in a rainbow as it can represent dreams. I left the rainbow and stars the only colourful elements added in to the design and left the writing black and white. I then did a design involving Fashion drawing out simple clothing pieces to welcome people to my clothing exhibition. I then did a small sketch on product design drawing out a simple bench to see if this is something I would be doing in 2033.
Figure 3: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
Continuing my ideas I went into drawing peacocks feather and the eyes. I added in 'Watch 2033' in the design. I felt that the peacock eyes represent something to myself as I find the peacock feather full of colour and design and the eyes represent something to myself religious wise. Writing the word 'watch' on top also shows that the eyes are looking into the future of 2033.

Figure 4: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
My final design began with the design of dreams in black and white with a colour rainbow shining in through the corner. I decided to add in butterflies as it links in with the theme dream and makes the design a peaceful calming poster to observe. I am quite happy with this design as I involved the camera as well and changed the title to 'Capture your dreams' I am happy I was able to mix my designs together into one and had come up with a title I wouldn't have expected. Planning out ideas and designs really did help with my overall outcome of my poster for 2033 and enjoy the experimenting with ideas.

I then had extra time so decided to do one of my original designs but to make the photo frames full of colour and the rest of the poster black and white. This photograph shows the design in a sepia format.

Graphics day 2

Day 2 of graphics began with a video on Milton Glaserwas involving typography. We then had a task  to do with the use of experimenting with numbers and letters through the use of shapes and different techniques. We started of by experimenting 10 different ways of forming letters or numbers through shapes and use of different media. I think I got on with this task quite well as it was using different methods of drawing or doodling to then finding shapes or numbers to appear with in that drawing. I find the task to be a successful one because I produced either numbers or letters in each piece and enjoyed the experimenting side of it as I had made several different samples trying it out instead of sketching plans.

Our next task involved using typography by creating our own style. First we was given books and a piece of paper containing the 'Gill Sans' font to trace from. The word I chose to use was 'dream' because I think its important to fulfil your dreams in whatever you want to do. At first I found it difficult to find a word to begin with as most other people had thought of the same word as me and also I wanted my word to stand out but eventually I discovered that dream is a very meaningful word to use and felt that it represented myself well.

Figure 10: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
My first idea of my own typography style was to use 3D writing, almost like graffiti as I feel it stands out more. I decided to keep it simple to black and white to not over complicate it. I made it so each letter gets bigger across the page. I am happy with my first idea I implicated as I feel it represents myself by using the 3D letters and spreading the word across the page.

Figure 11: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
I then moved on to a much simpler style in 2D non capital letters just writing across the word dream in a curly stylish hand writing. I completed this by adding in stars all around the word as this indicates dreams.

Figure 12: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
Finally for my last design i used the 'Gills sans' to write out the word dream. I first wrote the word normally then underneath wrote the word with the letters faced the opposite way. I then wrote out dream backwards to spell "maerd" then following this write this word with the letters faced the opposite way. I quite liked this idea as in one way or another the word dream was being written just in different forms. It would be interesting to see how it would have produced if it was continuously repeated either in black and white or in colour.

Todays tasks involving typography was really interesting and a creative part of graphics as you could invent any style you wanted of your own. However, I didn't manage to see any of the books containing various styles which I would have liked to seen to generate more ideas for myself and to view how you can start off with something simple and then continue to develop the idea into a fantastic style.

Graphics day 1

Day 1 of Graphics started off with a clip by Martin Luther King called "I have a dream" which was viewed on radio 4. This then moved on to a presentation from andy about his journey through studying graphics After this we was given a small project to complete through the week to be finished by Friday.

We then started doing small tasks on drawing the person either opposite us or next to us.

Figure 1: Daniel (2013) Authors own.
The first was to stare at the person opposite us for 30 seconds and to then draw them with our eyes closed for 3 minutes. This was a challenging task as I was unable to visually see the person and had to use only my memory to draw, also not being able to see on the paper what I was drawing was difficult as I didn't know where my face was on the paper.  For my first drawing I decided to start of with a pencil, my outcome of this exercise was funny but also quite unexpected, I had drawn several features of a face onto one sheet its as if the face was moving which looks quite interesting.  I quite liked my drawing of Daniel because it has a sense of movement involved which I think looks rather clever.

Figure 2: James (2013) Authors own.
The second exercise was to draw using our mouths, I found this task to be the hardest as I wasn't able to draw steady and it was also difficult to draw James as he was also facing downwards trying to draw with his mouth as well.  I found this drawing exercise to be a funny one and required a lot of concentration to try and achieve accurate lines. For this drawing I used a marker felt tip pen as I thought this would be the easiest media to use when drawing with my mouth.

Figure 3: Tamara (2013) Authors own.
Our next exercise was to draw using our left hand, I decided to use charcoal for this as I thought it would be easier to use as opposed to a pen or a pencil so I could make smoother lines. I found this to be quite successful as it didn't come out as bad I had expected. It was interesting to see how everyones drawings had changed when using their opposite hand and how important it is to have a steady hand.

Figure 4: Self portrait (2013) Authors own.
Our final task was to draw ourself with a continuos line so the pen doesn't leave the paper.  In addition to this we had to stand up and draw it. This was the most challenging task as we didn't have a mirror to observe ourselves so was working purely from memory. Not being able to let the pen leave the paper was also difficult as there was lines coming out everywhere. However, overall all 4 drawings was a fun exercise to carry out and was nice to be able to compare drawings by holding them up showing the rest of the class our different outcomes.

Figure 5: Ear 1 (2013) Authors own.
Our next task was to then draw someones ear using whatever material we desire. I decided to observe and record Daniels ear with charcoal as I feel this could show the texture of the ear more and the tone.  I feel that my ear piece did not produce as well as I had imagined as it did not look as realistic as the ear itself. However I feel that I had included good shading in the piece. I had then taken 3 pictures of my drawing using different contrasts to show how different they look with setting.
Figure 7: Ear 3 (2013) Authors own.
Using a sepia setting to show how the pice would appear if  produced on a coloured paper

Figure 6: Ear 2 (2013) Authors own.
Using a black and white setting to capture the charcoaled ear . I think this setting shows good mark making and a smooth soft tone.

On our next task we continued with the theme of faces and moved on to collaging. We all gathered together our magazine faces and was asked to collage different faces together. This was a fun task to carry out as we was all making silly faces or mixing up the genders and creating something different and unusual. After completing this task we then made a viewfinder to zoom into a section of our piece and to then record and capture that into our sketch books.

Figure 8: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
These our my pieces I created of my collages. Mixing different sizes of features on to one face.

Figure 9: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
A zoomed in version using my viewfinder of my collage I created below

Figure 10: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
On this collage I was mainly working around the sunglasses changing the lens. I also changed the mouth but after showing staff and friends in my class they said that it appeared to seem the real mouth of that model. So on this collage I found it to be my most realistic looking one as if it hasn't been edited or worked on.

This is a photo of me using my viewfinder on one of my collages.
Figure 12: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
This is me using that viewfinder and recording my collage using watercolours. I sectioned of this point as it shows both sides of a different face merged into one.

3D day 3

Day 3 of 3D started off with a presentation by the tutors about the 3D pathway and what type of areas are covered if we take the pathway. After this we was asked to design 3D bridges in our sketch books using paper. After doing these small samples we was put in to groups of 7 to join our ideas together to then make a large bridge together so that a remote controlled car would be able to drive through the bridge without breaking. In addition to this the bridge had to be high enough so that a boat was able to flow pass underneath as well and that only 2 points could touch the ground of the bridge. This was the most challenging task yet but was interesting how our bridge produced at the end.
I am pleased to say that the remote control car just about passed through the bridge, however, we had created a small round a bout at the end and so the car did fall off and was not stable enough to stop the car from falling but was stable enough to hold the car. I think in terms of time management if we had more time we could have been able to improve our bridge by making a stronger end to allow the car to go straight and not sideways.  I felt that we all worked well together as a team and tried to build our bridge as stable as possible and that our ideas all linked in well with each other and got straight into building it as soon as we got together. If we was to build this another time round I think that we could have discussed our ideas a bit more into detail and planned it out well instead of planning and working on it at the same time.
