Day 1 of Graphics started off with a clip by Martin Luther King called "I have a dream" which was viewed on radio 4. This then moved on to a presentation from andy about his journey through studying graphics After this we was given a small project to complete through the week to be finished by Friday.
We then started doing small tasks on drawing the person either opposite us or next to us.

Figure 1: Daniel (2013) Authors own.
The first was to stare at the person opposite us for 30 seconds and to then draw them with our eyes closed for 3 minutes. This was a challenging task as I was unable to visually see the person and had to use only my memory to draw, also not being able to see on the paper what I was drawing was difficult as I didn't know where my face was on the paper. For my first drawing I decided to start of with a pencil, my outcome of this exercise was funny but also quite unexpected, I had drawn several features of a face onto one sheet its as if the face was moving which looks quite interesting. I quite liked my drawing of Daniel because it has a sense of movement involved which I think looks rather clever.

Figure 2: James (2013) Authors own. The second exercise was to draw using our mouths, I found this task to be the hardest as I wasn't able to draw steady and it was also difficult to draw James as he was also facing downwards trying to draw with his mouth as well. I found this drawing exercise to be a funny one and required a lot of concentration to try and achieve accurate lines. For this drawing I used a marker felt tip pen as I thought this would be the easiest media to use when drawing with my mouth. |
 |
Figure 3: Tamara (2013) Authors own. Our next exercise was to draw using our left hand, I decided to use charcoal for this as I thought it would be easier to use as opposed to a pen or a pencil so I could make smoother lines. I found this to be quite successful as it didn't come out as bad I had expected. It was interesting to see how everyones drawings had changed when using their opposite hand and how important it is to have a steady hand. |
 |
Figure 4: Self portrait (2013) Authors own. Our final task was to draw ourself with a continuos line so the pen doesn't leave the paper. In addition to this we had to stand up and draw it. This was the most challenging task as we didn't have a mirror to observe ourselves so was working purely from memory. Not being able to let the pen leave the paper was also difficult as there was lines coming out everywhere. However, overall all 4 drawings was a fun exercise to carry out and was nice to be able to compare drawings by holding them up showing the rest of the class our different outcomes. |
 |
Figure 5: Ear 1 (2013) Authors own. Our next task was to then draw someones ear using whatever material we desire. I decided to observe and record Daniels ear with charcoal as I feel this could show the texture of the ear more and the tone. I feel that my ear piece did not produce as well as I had imagined as it did not look as realistic as the ear itself. However I feel that I had included good shading in the piece. I had then taken 3 pictures of my drawing using different contrasts to show how different they look with setting. |

Figure 7: Ear 3 (2013) Authors own. Using a sepia setting to show how the pice would appear if produced on a coloured paper

 |
Figure 6: Ear 2 (2013) Authors own. Using a black and white setting to capture the charcoaled ear . I think this setting shows good mark making and a smooth soft tone.
On our next task we continued with the theme of faces and moved on to collaging. We all gathered together our magazine faces and was asked to collage different faces together. This was a fun task to carry out as we was all making silly faces or mixing up the genders and creating something different and unusual. After completing this task we then made a viewfinder to zoom into a section of our piece and to then record and capture that into our sketch books.

Figure 8: Untitled (2013) Authors own.
These our my pieces I created of my collages. Mixing different sizes of features on to one face. |
 |
Figure 9: Untitled (2013) Authors own. A zoomed in version using my viewfinder of my collage I created below |
 |
Figure 10: Untitled (2013) Authors own. On this collage I was mainly working around the sunglasses changing the lens. I also changed the mouth but after showing staff and friends in my class they said that it appeared to seem the real mouth of that model. So on this collage I found it to be my most realistic looking one as if it hasn't been edited or worked on. |

Figure 11: Untitled (2013) Authors own. This is a photo of me using my viewfinder on one of my collages. |
 |
Figure 12: Untitled (2013) Authors own. This is me using that viewfinder and recording my collage using watercolours. I sectioned of this point as it shows both sides of a different face merged into one. |
